Ayurveda: the five elements in the macrocosm and microcosm

It is said that Ayurveda developed in the meditative minds of the seers of “truths,” the rishi; for thousands of years their teachings were transmitted orally from master to disciples and then were transcribed in Sanskrit in the Vedic texts.

The Rishis perceived that consciousness was energy manifested in the five fundamental principles or elements (in Sanskrit panchamahabhuta): Ether or empty space (in Sanskrit akasha ), Air (in Sanskrit vayu), Fire, Water (in Sanskrit jala) and Earth (in Sanskrit prithvi).

In the beginning the world existed in a state of unmanifest consciousness, then the primordial cosmic sound (Aum or Om) with its vibrations gave rise to creation.

Ether (akasha)

The first element to appear was Ether, its subtle movement gave rise to Air, which is nothing but Ether in action.

The movement of ether gave rise to friction that generated heat, particles of energy-heat combined giving rise to a light, Fire. Through the heat of fire, certain ethereal elements dissolved, transforming into liquids and giving rise to Water, which finally solidified to give body to Earth. So from Ether all the other elements originate.

The macrocosm

In nature (macrocosm), created by the combination of all the elements, there are living organic bodies of the plant and animal world and inorganic elements such as minerals, so it is easy to understand that from the womb of the five elements all matter is generated and all five elements exist in all matter (example of Water: solid water, ice, that is, a manifestation of Earth.

The heat (Fire) inherent in ice can melt it, giving rise to Water; Water can evaporate (Air) and then disappear into Ether), from this it is clear that energy and matter are one and the same.

The microcosm

The five elements present in all matter also exist within each individual (microcosm).

In the human body, for example, there are many spaces that are manifestations of the Ether element, such as the spaces in the mouth, nose, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, abdomen, chest, capillaries, lymphatic vessels, tissues, and cells.

Air (vayu)

Space in motion is air; within the human body, Air manifests in the broadest movements of the muscles, in the pulsations of the heart, in the expansion and contraction of the lungs, in the contractions and peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, and in intracellular and intercellular exchanges; in fact, all impulses of the central nervous system are governed by Air, which generates movement.

Fire (agni)

The third element, Fire, in the physical body is identified with metabolism. It works in the digestive system, in the gray matter of the cells and the brain; Fire manifests as intelligence, perceives light, thus governs sight, thermoregulates, and governs all enzymatic and digestive processes.

Water (jala)

Water inside the body manifests as the secretion of gastric juices, saliva, in the mucous membranes, in the blood, plasma, and cytoplasm. Water is vital for human survival; dehydration must in fact be immediately replenished.

Earth (prithvi)

Finally, Earth, thanks to which all the elements remain cohesive, giving rise to the supporting structures such as bones, cartilage, nails, muscles, tendons, skin, hair, and fat.
